Objectives

Application  and consolidation of the theorical knowledge of Pediatric Dentistry

Skills development in pre-clinical environment  with the most frequently used materials and treatments  in Pediatric Dentistry

Develop knowledge and clinical skills in recognising preventive treatment needs and carrying out primary and secondary preventive actions on patients, as well as simple restorative treatment.

Apply clinical communication skills with patients and caregivers; train to motivate and educate, with the aim of improve oral health literacy and developing skills in the area of community oral health.

To teach the local etiology of malocclusion and the fundamentals of orthodontic diagnosis as well as its clinical application. To teach how to diagnose Class I, II and III malocclusions and define their treatment.

Promote research and communication skills through the production and presentation of a scientific poster on the subject of the course unit

Learning outcomes and competences

Through the knowledge and skills to be acquired students will be able to identify the signs and symptoms of various pathologies and treatment needs in pediatric patients. In addition, they will be able to know the specificities of various auxiliary diagnostic aids. Through the practical activity, it is expected that students will be able to develop the competence to perform preventive acts and prepare therapeutic proposals, namely in preventive and interceptive terms.Understand the malocclusion and its etiology. To know the signs and symptoms of Angle malocclusions and general therapeutic procedures.

Clinical exma, diagnosis and treatment plan
Dental anatomy
Imagiology in Pediatric Dentistry
Development dental anomalies
Anestesiology in Pediatric Dentistry
Children psychology
1st permanent molar
Oral Surgery and Pathology in children and adolescents
Cavity design
Dental materials in Pediatric Dentistry
Pulp Therapy
Prosthesis in Pediatric Dentistry
Konwledge of primary prevention methods for oral diseases. Knowledge of human normal and pathologic  development at the facial and stomatognathic level. Malocclusion and biologic and mechanic bases of orthodontic treatment.
Co-requirements- application of transversal skills acquired by students in different areas of Dentistry

Program

Seminars on the paediatric dentistry consultation and physical examination, paediatric dentistry for babies, pharmacological control of behaviour in paediatric dentistry, special and medically compromised patients, oral and gingival pathology in paediatric dentistry, eruptive changes and space maintenance, oral habits, incisor-molar hypomineralisation, dental trauma, laser in paediatric dentistry

Activity in a pre-clinical context: carrying out restorative and pulp treatments with different techniques and materials. Analysis of clinical cases

Activity in a clinical context: carrying out primary and secondary preventive treatments and simple restorations; motivation and education for health and oral health; promotion of oral health literacy.

Local etiological factors. Radiographic anatomy; Ricketts cephalometric analysis and other analyses. Class I, II and III malocclusions: - components and characteristics - treatment.  Impressions and orthodontic models. Model analysis: Moyers, Bolton, DDM on permanent dentition and Korkaus.  Elaboration of a removable device.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical and Practice classes and Seminars
Practical classes- seminars, clincal cases discussion, preparation and presentation of a scientific poster, pre-clinical activity in pediatric dentistry and patients attendance in clinic.
Practical assessment (clinical and pre-clinical) will be based on the OSCE methodology.

Students will have access, published on the MOODLE platform, to the parameters used to assess each of the practical components.

Eligibility for exams

Minimum attendance of 75% in TP and P classes and submission of the work required in each class.

Calculation formula of final grade

50% Theoretical-Practical (50% continuos evaluatiion and 50%- TP test) + 50% Practical (40% continuos evaluatiion and 40% - clinical activity and 20% scientific poster presentation)
Minimum score of 10.0 (in 20) in each of the theoretical-practical and practical components
Examination appeals- TP examination- 50%+ Practical examination- 50% (minimum of 75% of class attendance - TP and P is required to allow access to this exam). Minimum score of 10.0
