Objectives

- Aquisition of knowledge about the fundamentals of Biochemistry and its relationship with daily life phenomenons.
- Skills of analysis, integration and discussion of aquired knowledge.
- Development of identification and interpretation skills of new situations related with aquired knowledge.
- Aquisition of laboratorial work skills.
- Understanding the relevance of Biochemistry experimental methods as a lerning basis and its aplication in Medical Sciences.

Learning outcomes and competences

To have the ability to understand at a chemical and biological level some of the phenomena that happen in our daily life, which involve our body and how it can adpt to distinct situations.

THEORETICAL AND THEORETCIAL-PRACTICAL CLASSES
- Introduction to biological processes:
Organic chemistry fundaments. Acids and bases.
- Structure and function of organic biomolecules:
Carbohydrates. Lipids. Proteins. Nucleic acids.
- Enzymes and enzimatic catalysis.
- Oral biochemistry:
Saliva composition. Buffer sistems of saliva. Teeth composition. Fluoride biochemistry.



PRACTICAL CLASSES
- Laboratory safety rules.
- Significative algarisms.
- Concentration of solutions.
- Preparation of solutions with exact concentration.
- pH determination of a solution.
- Carbohydrates identification.
- Extraction and analysis by thin layer chromatography of egg yolk lipids.
- Extraction and quantitation of egg yolk cholesterol.
- Protein identification.
- Protein quantification of a sample.
- Preparation and running of a SDS-PAGE gel.
- Protein isoelectric point determination.
- Study of salliva's composition.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes of exposure of the different subject, with continuous interaction with the students. Theoretical-practical classes for the elaboration of exercises related to the syllabus of the course. Laboratory practical classes. Practical classes for online assessment of the students in which they must prepare a text developing topics provided by the teacher and may, for this, use bibliographic and research online.
