Objectives

The objectives of this course are designed to provide students with skills which enable them to study and understand the aspects involved in oral rehabilitation, namely those related to the areas of Fixed Prosthodontics (simple treatments on teeth and implants), of Removable Prosthodontics (classic and tooth-supported overdentures), and Occlusion and Orofacial Pain (occlusal splints), under teacher supervision.

Learning outcomes and competences

- Perform clinical examinations, collecting biological, psychological and social information needed to evaluate oral and medical conditions

- Familiarity with available treatment options in order to formulate an overall integrated plan

- Ability to prioritize the complementary diagnostic tests most commonly used in Prosthodontics

- Autonomous execution of clinical treatments in patients (under teacher supervision), particularly in simple Fixed Prosthodontic cases (inlays, crowns and ceramic or metal-ceramic short-span bridges, supported by teeth or implants); Removable Prosthodontics (partial and full dentures, acrylic and skeletal, and simple implant-supported overdentures); Occlusion and Orofacial Pain (occlusal splints); and placement of dental implants in simple cases (short-span bidges and overdentures)

-  Awareness of practical laboratory procedures and the new technologies used in Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Occlusion

- Psychomotor skills and aesthetic sensibility.

Program

Practical classes with patients (8h per week), which comprise:

- Medical history and clinical examination of the patient.

- Study of clinical cases (with the teacher, in the class and in the presence of the patient, and in the following week, without the presence of the patient). The treatment plan, uni or multi-disciplinary, with alternative strategies and the corresponding budgets, will be approved by the teacher and presented to the patient, in a written document. The agreed treatment plan will be thoroughly supervised by the teacher in each clinical session.

- Clinical treatment of patients (2 students per box), for rehabilitation with Fixed prosthesis (inlays, crowns and short- or long-span bridges, either ceramic or metal-ceramic, tooth- or implant-supported); Removable prosthesis (partial and full dentures, acrylic and skeletal, and simple or complex implant-supported overdentures); Occlusion (EMG, TENS, occlusal splints); and placement of dental implants in simple cases (short-span bridges and overdentures).

- Teaching demonstrations of less common clinical situations.

- Once a month (4 hours) the most exemplary treatment plans of the clinical practice are presented and discussed by all students.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The programmatic content fits to the defined objectives. By carrying out clinical procedures under teacher supervision students will appraise all their cognitive, technical and affective abilities, and will apply their knowledge in an integrated way, regarding the psychological relationship, the current understanding of uni or multidisciplinary planning, the learning of specific surgical techniques, the selection of materials and techniques, the aesthetic aspects and the color choice, the relationship with dental technician and the need for support from other disciplines.

The monthly group discussions are used to facilitate the development of independent decision-making in the diagnosis, planning and execution of the treatment, and integration with theoretical knowledge.

These aspects should be considered mandatory in the patient clinical report which requires research and critical use of scientific information.

The clinical cases treated by the graduate students may be addressed in scientific publications in the context of other curricular units.

Eligibility for exams

Terms of frequency: Attendance of at least 75% of the classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

Evaluation criteria:

The final grade is calculated taking into account the following parameters:

- Evaluation of clinical practice, taking into account the attendance and punctuality, the familiarity with procedures, the nature and amount of teaching support needed, the level of the clinical procedure, the correct evaluation of clinical outcomes and the use of  clinical protocols that ensure patient security - 70%

- Evaluation of clinical case reports - 15%

- Evaluation of student participation in the monthly sessions of clinical case discussion - 15%

Evaluation by final exam in either regular, recourse or special periods includes a written test, a preclinical practical test and an oral examination.
