The exercise of a medical and dental medicine based in prevention, diagnosis, therapy and prognosis of the disease inevitably requires the use of obtaining procedures and careful analysis, evaluation or use of biomedical information and knowledge. In this context, awareness of the historical evolution of medical thought and knowledge helps to create cultural foundations that support the progressive nature of scientific knowledge and clinical practice by contributing to a more scientific effectiveness.
The teaching of Introduction to Medicine subject aims to provide students with basic insight of the History of Medicine and understand the changes occurring in knowledge throughout History. Therefore, the student should be able to understand the political and social characteristics and ethical and scientific concepts in classical Greece; establish relations between the medieval universe and medical practice; be able to describe the peculiarities of the modern age, identifying the main ideas about man, universe and moral. In addition, it is intended that the student begins to develop proficiency in scientific production and speaking skills by performing a written monography and the presentation of it, followed by the discussion of the work in the classroom environment.
The contact with literature review methodologies will allow acquiring the ability to produce scientific written work and simultaneously acquire skills for their oral presentation.
Creating cultural theoretical foundations that support the progressivity of scientific and clinical knowledge, contributing to a more effective scientifical practice.
Besides the basic knowledge of college students:
General evolution of medicine. The preludes. The first ancient medicines. The origins of medical reasoning: the Renaissance and the genesis of the scientific spirit. The prologue of modern medicine birth: from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. The medical revolution: the birth of the anatomical-clinical method. Birth and heyday of biomedicine: the path of knowledge and medical reasoning in the twentieth century. The way from psychological difficulties to mental illness and medical ethics. Medicine and the community. From health care to health policy. Medicine tomorrow?
Theoretical learning - a 60 minutes weekly T class. Considerations of matters related to the subject, using appropriate audiovisual material. Learning theory and practice - a 60 minutes weekly TP class. Discussion of issues relevant to the topic of lecture. Bibliographical research for development of TP work in the form of paper and the respective summarized oral presentation.

Student can’t exceed the pre-established limit for absence and must deliver the planned work. The regime of frequency of UP is applied, look up at UP and FMDUP regulations (75% contact hours). For approval in any of the schemes it is essential to fulfill the TP work.
Formula Evaluation
Ordinary students:
Normal season - Final grade =exam T 35% + TP work 40% + minitests TP 25%
Recourse season - Final grade =exam T 35% + TP work 40% + minitests TP 25%
Students with attendance exemption (AE):
Final grade = T exam (60%) + TP work (40%), it is essential for access any season of final exam, the physical presence during the oral presentation of TP work.
For the students with AE that want to accomplish the mini-tests, it is applied the ordinary regime: exam T 35% + TP work 40% + minitests TP 25%
For approval in any of the regimens it is necessary condition to fulfill the TP work.
Students whose status allows a system of special assessment, may request an assessment outside the normal schedule and the different components of the evaluation are safeguarded.
Final mark = T exam (60%) + TP work (40%)
Students with attendance exemption (AE):
Final grade = T exam (60%) + TP work (40%), it is essential for access any season of final exam, the physical presence during the oral presentation of TP work.
The students with attendance exemption wishing to undertake the mini-tests, can make use of the ordinary regime: Final mark = T exam 35% + TP works 40% + minitests TP 25%). They shall notify the teacher in writing they wish to opt for this assessment regime at the beginning of the semester.
For approval in any of the schemes it is essential to fulfill the TP work like ordinary students do.

According to the rules relating to the procedures for assessing FMDUP. The improvement of marks is done at the recourse season through the repetition of a theoretical exam that includes the subjects of TP classes (eliminated in the normal regime by helding mini-tests).
Final score = T Exam (60%) + TP work (40%).
The assessment in this UC is distributed with final exam.
Theoretical evaluation (T) - Performed by an examination composed of true or false questions, matching, multiple choice or short written answer to questions. This examination will be quoted 0-20 values.
Distributed evaluation (TP) - Assigned on the basis of a written work / article, the respective oral presentation and the deliver of mini-tests on the subjects discussed in the TP classes during those classes. The assigned grade is 0-20 values.
Exam review - Students who wish to review the exam may do so on the date and time indicated by the teacher. They shall enrol previously to review the exam, according to the information presented by the teacher.
