Objectives
• To know and understand the importance of the microbial world: bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses and prions.
• To know the microbial taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, metabolism and genetics.
• To understand the microorganism-host interaction as well as the role of microorganisms in Human disease.
• To know different methods and the general principles of microbial growth control.
• To know the oral normal microbialflora and the etiology of oral infections
• To know and understand the laboratorial methods and techniques used in microorganisms handling, isolation, characterization, identification and study.
Program
1) Introduction to microbial world: history and importance.
2) Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells biology.
3) Microbial nutrition and metabolism.
4) Microbial growth.
5) Microbial genetics.
6) Classification of Microorganisms.
7) The Prokaryotes: Domains Bacteria and Archaea. Morphology, reproduction, culture and taxonomy.
8) The Eukaryotes: Fungi and Parasites. Morphology, reproduction, culture and taxonomy.
9) Viruses and Prions. Morphology, reproduction, culture and taxonomy.

Eligibility for exams
Students must attain at least 75% of all lectures and practical sessions.
Minimal classification of continuous evaluation = 3,9 in 8.
Calculation formula of final grade
Option 1. Two semester exams:
(Mean of the two semester exams classifications X 0.6) + (Continuous evaluation X 0.4)
Option 2. Final exam:
(Final exam classification X 0.6 + (Continuous evaluation classification X 0.4)
Minimal classification = 10 in 20.
