Objectives

This course focuses on presentations – and discussion – of a wide range of contemporary topics concerning managerial practice and economic affairs. Topics are introduced and discussed by leading professionals from the business sector, academia, government and not-for-profit organizations.

The course shall allow students to acquire new knowledge based on the concrete cases and topics addressed, as well as to gain the ability to discuss and critically reflect on diverse topics that relate to the field of innovation.

Learning outcomes and competences

To be able to understand and critically discuss diverse economic and management topics that relate to the fields of innovation.

To apply concepts and theories discussed during the master programme.

To be in contact with contemporary affairs and challenges of companies, organizations and the society, as well with communities of professionals and practitioners.

To develop communication, debating and listening skills.

Program

Seminars consist in guest talks by leading professionals from different professional communities (firms, academia, government and not-for-profits), in topics related to innovation. They discuss their experiences and practices, both from a personal perspective and from the angle of their organizations.

Não existe bibliografia obrigatória; os estudantes são incentivados a procurar informação de suporte aos temas apresentados pelos oradores.

Students may look for specific literature related to each of the seminars.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Presentation / discussion of cases and themes related to contemporary economic and management affairs.

Beyond presentations, each session has enough room for debate, in which the students are expected to actively participate.

The first lecture of the semester takes place with the course coordinator, in order to set the rules of the game and expectations for the course.

There will be 10-11 Seminars during the semester. Beyond attending the seminars, each student will:

  1. Prepare a detailed report about one specific seminar;
  2. Write two synthetic reports (about other seminars);
  3. Discuss the reports of two fellow students (in a web forum at the Moodle Canvas).

Eligibility for exams

Students should attend the seminars and may only miss three of them.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final grade is calculated as follows:

FG = 0,55 RA + 0,25 RS + 0,20 DISC

In which: RA = detailed report; RS = overall assessment of the synthetic reports; DISC = overall assessment of the report discussions.

Classification improvement

Students may prepare another detailed report, on a different seminar. Only the detailed report is subject to eventual grade improvement (not the other grading components).
