Resumo (PT): Este artigo procura evidenciar as novas formas de percepção da paisagem e de fruição do espaço urbano permitidas pela irrupção do transporte urbano sobre carril, com base num texto de memórias sobre o Rio de Janeiro publicado em 1897 por João Chagas, português, escritor, jornalista e importante político republicano. João Chagas assume um estatuto de flâneur e apresenta uma leitura surpreendente do seu primeiro dia na cidade, com particular incidência no efeito do ¿bond¿ (tramway). A utilização do ¿bond¿ permite-lhe captar a cidade em relance, na cadência de um movimento acelerado, tanto pelas ruas da cidade antiga como pelas alamedas da cidade em expansão, colhendo, desta forma, impressões gerais sobre a civilização urbana da capital do Brasil.

Abstract (EN): This article seeks to highlight the new forms of landscape perception and enjoyment of the urban space made possible by the appearance of urban transport on rails, based on a text of memories about Rio de Janeiro published in 1897 by Joao Chagas, a Portuguese writer, journalist and important Republican politician. Joao Chagas assumed the status of a flaneur and presents a striking reading of his first day in town, particularly focusing the effect of the tram. The use of the tram allowed him to capture a glimpse of the city at an accelerated pace, observing both the streets of the old town and the avenues of the growing city. In this way, he describes overall impressions of urban civilization in the capital of Brazil.
