ÁLVARO AGUIAR has a PhD in Economics from the University of South Carolina, USA, with an equivalent degree from the University of Porto.

Since 1993, he has been a Professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Porto, where he has taught and researched in the areas of Macroeconomics, Economic Growth and Economic Policy and is currently an Associate Professor and member of the Council of Representatives. Previously he held the positions of director of the BSc in Economics (1994-1996), President of the Pedagogical Council (1998-2001), director of the PhD program in Economics (2004-2005), director of CEMPRE - Center for Macroeconomic Studies and Forecast (1996-2005), director of the Masters in Economics (2014-2019) and president of the Scientific Group of Economics (2019-2023).

From 2003 to 2005 he held the position of Pro-Rector of the University of Porto. In 2021 he was a member of the General Council of the University of Porto. From April 2015 until March 2023 he was a member of the General and Supervisory Board and the respective Remuneration Committee, at Porto Business School.

Between August 2005 and June 2011, he was seconded to the Office of the Minister of State and Finance, as Economic Advisor. He represented Portugal as a member of the Economic and Financial Committee of the European Union until June 2011 and as a member of the Board of Directors of the European Investment Bank until January 2012.

From December 2009 to December 2013 he served as a member of the General Council of Fundação Cidade de Guimarães, an institution in charge of the organization of Guimarães 2012, European Capital of Culture.

He is Chairman of the Supervisory Board of CMVM, the Portuguese Securities Market Commission.
