The general purpose of this course is to give the student the capacity of using techniques of data analysis and the knowledge of some basic concept of probability theory. It is also a main goal to give tools for the study of the statistical inference.
The student should learn techniques of data analysis, basic concepts of probability theory and the basic knowledge for the study of the statistical inference.
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
1. Unidimensional samples
Elementary treatment of data samples. Graphical representations. Location measure, dispersion, asymmetry. Concentration analysis.
2. Bidimensional samples
Graphical representation of bivariate samples. Linear correlation coefficient.
PROBABILITY THEORY
1. Probability axiomatic
Random experience, results space and events space. Classical theory of Laplace. Probability axiomatic definition and properties. Conditional probability. Bayes theorem. Independent events.
2. Discrete Random variables
Definition of discrete random variable. Distribution and probability functions. Expected value. Moments. Asymmetry. Independence of discrete random variables. Discrete distributions: Uniform, Bernoulli, Binomial, Hypergeometric and Poisson.
3. Continuous Random variables
Definition of continuous random variable. Distribution and probability density functions. Expected value. Moments. Asymmetry. Independence of continuous random variables. Continuous distributions: Uniform, Normal and Exponential. Central Limit Theorem.
The lectures will focus the theoretical aspects of the theory but also include the discussion of exercises. As a complement the curricular unit has an on-line course available through e-learning platform of Porto University.

For obtaining a classification higher than 18, the student may have to do another exam.
