Business Valuation

2MiM01 - ECTS

Provide the students with knowledge about available valuation methods that enable them to prepare or to critically appraise, acquisition proposals for existing businesses. The course will seek to raise participants' awareness of the necessary conditions for the acquisition of companies so as to add value to an organization, understand the risk factors to be taken into account and the accounting consequences of this type of operations.

Operations and Supply Chain Management

2MiM04 - ECTS

This course aims to give students an understanding of the fundamentals of the operations and logistics function in companies. Operations is analyzed from strategic and operational points of view, focusing on the competitive ability it can generate in organizations. As the integration of operations is vital today, this course will also focus on supply chain management and logistics.

The operations of a company, whether industrial or services, consist of transforming inputs into outputs. With the integration of the supply chain, Transportation, Distribution, Warehousing, and Localization activities gain special relevance.

Therefore, managing operations and the supply chain involves managing both human resources and material resources. To understand the importance of the production or operations function, it is enough to note that a large part, or even the majority, of a company's resources are under its control.


People Management

(a) Make sense of the different theoretical perspectives to the management of people and the major issues involved in managing people and 'being managed' in an organisational context

(b) Develop the skills and abilities to analyse management problems with a relevant 'human factor' in a context of significant changes in work relations and major environmental and technological challenges.

Strategic Management

At the end of the course each student is supposed to handle, discuss and apply the basic concepts of strategic analysis and strategic implementation.

Financial Management

2MiM02 - ECTS

The objective of the discipline is to go through the major problems of Corporate Finance, formulating the most important issues arising from the financial activity of a corporation, that is, the concepts, methods and decision tools which serve as a basis for financial analysis and decision-making in the company, namely investment and financing decisions. It will be sought always direct support on the contributions of the most relevant academic work on each issue. 

The program is developed following a perspective of the value of the corporation. As a basic paradigm, it has been adopted the maximization of the value of the corporation for its shareholders, partners or owners. Every financial issue will thus be approached in terms of its potential for generating corporate value. 

The program of the discipline includes the strategic and structural issues in financial decision-making, the most important decisions of value creation. 

Marketing and Commercial Management

The course is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the fundamental principles of marketing, marketing strategy and sales strategy making, and the role of marketing in the modern corporation.

The focus will be on getting to know the basic techniques for defining and segmenting a market for goods and services, choosing a segment as target and then integrating product, price, promotion and distribution to offer a superior marketing mix leading to long term competitive advantage.

Management Accounting and Control

This course will explore recent discussions and advances in management accounting and control research and practice. Particular attention will be devoted to topics related with cost behaviour and management, and with decision making at an operational and strategic level.

Students will be encouraged to develop a critical approach about the course topics.

World Economy

2M3E08 - ECTS This course intends to make students knowledgeable to some of the main features of the contemporaneous world economy and more capable of critically discuss its major trends and anticipate scearios for their evolution.

Behavioral Finance

2MiF22 - ECTS

Over the past several decades, financial theory has been based on the assumption that investors and managers are generally rational and that the prices of securities are usually efficient. However, empirical evidence suggests that markets are not always efficient and that investors and managers are not fully rational. Behavioral finance offers a more realistic view of economic agents’ decision-making. It argues that many facts about asset prices, investor behavior, and managerial behavior are best understood using models where at least some agents are not fully rational. In particular, behavioral finance uses psychological evidence to understand financial phenomena better. This course aims to introduce students to the field of behavioral finance.

Customer-centricity and Experience Management

Customer centricity is attracting a growing interest from academic and business arenas. Companies with mature levels of customer-centricity report 2.5X revenues compared to less customer-centric companies. The ability to create and manage customer-centric experiences is considered an essential source of competitive advantage due to its impact on customer satisfaction, loyalty, and advocacy.

The course has two main goals: (1) to present and discuss the main challenges, concepts and tools related with customer-centricity;  (2) to develop their ability to create and manage customer-centric experiences to increase customer satisfaction and loyalty. 

Additionally, the course aims at developing students' critical thinking, creativity, team-work and communication skills.

Objectives:

  • Provide an introduction to projects and project management.

  • Describe the main components of the project plan.

  • Describe the main concepts and techniques for scheduling a project.

  • Describe the main concepts and techniques for allocating and leveling resources.

  • Describe the main budgeting methods, and the main types of cost.

  • Describe the main concepts regarding the monitoring and controlling of a project, with particular emphasis on the Earned Value indicators.

  • Describe the main concepts regarding the termination and evaluation of a project.

 

Management Research

With this UC students should be able to:
  1. Understand what management research is and its usefulness for managers
  2. Understand and know the main business research methods
  3. Understand and characterize the business research process (e.g. know how to write a research proposal, know how to choose the appropriate research design, know how to use various processes of data collection)
  4. Broadly know the various procedures of data analysis and presentation
  5. Understand and disccuss the ethical issues for conducting business research.

Business2Business Marketing

2MiM19 - ECTS

This course has two main goals: (1) To present and discuss the basic conceptual tools of Marketing in Business-to-Business contexts; based on those concepts, (2) to develop the abilities of students to analyse and make decisions regarding the main marketing variables in an integrated organizacional process. This course adopts a non-traditional approach to Business-to-Business Marketing that has as core elements the management of inter-organizational relationships in network contexts. Students will have the opportunity to compare this approach with more classical (.e.g Kotlerian) approaches and discuss its adequacy in B2B settings.

Business Case Analysis

2MiM11 - ECTS

This course aims to provide students with the knowledge needed for the analysis of a diverse range of Business Cases . It is expected that by the end of the course the students are able to:

a) identify problem (s) present in the business case
b) critically analyze the context in which the company operates by appropriate  databases and methodologies
c) identify alternative solutions to the problem (s) identified and provide the best solution to be proposed by using appropriate decision criteria 
d) analyze the financial and organizational impacts of the proposed recommendation;
e) submit an implementation plan;
f) identify key risks given the proposed recommendation.

Students are required to present their proposals orally.

 

Business Challenge

2MiM12 - ECTS

This course aims to challenge students with a real life project, or a challenge related with a real life organization, thus leading them to apply competences and knowledge acquired throughout their academic training and facilitating their entry in the job market.

Given the growing importance of soft skills, it is also intended that students develop or strengthen their ability to work in a team, namely to debate ideas in a sustained and constructive way, to organize teamwork, to manage conflicts, and to communicate in a clear and attractive way.

Research Work Plan

2MiM15 - ECTS

To empower students to apply their acquired research methodology and data analysis skills to an unexplored scientific domain, culminating in the development of a project that leads to the creation of a master's dissertation or project or internship report.

 

 

Seminars

2MiM14 - ECTS The course offers students the opportunity to broaden their knowledge (both theoretical and applied), through talks given by guest speakers from corporations, government, and/or the social sector. Therefore, the objective is that students develop an ability to critically discuss diverse management topics, gaining a good understanding of what are the present trends, how the world and the economy are changing, and how organizations are adjusting their strategies and management practices to an increasingly complex and uncertain environment.

Dissertation/Project/Internship

2MiM16 - ECTS
Following the previously developed work plan, students will produce a FINAL ESSAY that will be assessed by an independent commitee, corresponding to an original dissertation, curricular internship report or Project report (hereafter mentioned as "dissertation"), on a specific subject in the area of Management.
