Resumo (PT): In each country, home design has experienced little evolution in what concerns modelling of space and type of facilities available. The intervening parties in the construction industry - promoters, designers, contractors, materials producers - mostly operating within their own country, have faced only limited exigencies on new proposals about dwelling types and adaptability. Following the opening of frontiers and the accessibility of new markets, the designer must now deal with the possibility of accessing Clients with different requirements and also the offer of new materials or construction techniques coming or developed in foreign countries. An efficient understanding and introduction of these new aspects as design constraints is essential in order to achieve a satisfactory result. Therefore, good communication and comprehensive plan of work in which all design team members are involved can play an important part. In this paper this first part of the design process will be analysed and a checklist of all relevant actions to be performed by each team member so that any new and traditional conditions can be correctly understood and incorporated in the design will be presented.
