Abstract (EN): Administrative databases (AD) are repositories of administrative and clinical data related to patient contact episodes with all sorts of health facilities (primary care, hospitals, pharmacies, etc.). The use of AD data is increasing in Mental Health research as the advantages of using AD surpass some of the difficulties Mental health researchers find when using data from other sources (clinical trials, cohort studies, etc.). The large number of patients/contact episodes available, the systematic and broad register, and the fact that AD provides real-world data are some of the pros in using AD data. There are some methodological aspects that must be addressed when using this type of databases in order to provide solid and valid results. The possibility of clinical and administrative errors in an AD is a reality when using secondary data in Mental Health Research, and diagnostic code validation studies may be performed to estimate clinical and administrative accuracy. This chapter described in detail the pros and cons of using secondary data in mental health research and specifies the methodological steps a researcher must follow in order to find valid conclusions in AD from a clinical point of view. © 2021 Elsevier Inc.
