Abstract (EN): The first edition of the International Conference Footbridge was held in Paris in November 2002, under the auspices of the French Association of Civil Engineers (AFGC) and of the Technical Advisory Bureau for Steel Users (OTUA). This event was organised in the sequence of two major occurrences of vibrations in urban long span footbridges, and motivated intensive research towards the understanding of governing phenomena and the development of dynamic design rules. The high interest of this event and the understanding of the importance of Footbridges as a topic worth of specific treatment in the context of Civil Engineering applications, not necessarily exclusively in terms of dynamic behaviour, prompted a second edition of the Footbridge Conference, which was organised by the Department of Architectural Construction of the University of Venice, Italy and by OTUA, and held in Venice in December 2005. At the same time, a Workshop was organised by OTUA to discuss and present results of research in Dynamics of Footbridges and, in particular, the French Recommendations for dynamic design of Footbridges, edited by AFGC and SETRA. The growing construction of footbridges as iconic structures, the importance of the correct integration in the landscape, satisfying functionality principles and offering simultaneously safety, comfort and fruition along the walking path, added by the reduced loads and scale that render these structures the ideal vehicles for experimentation and innovation, have contributed to significant progress in design and increased interest in footbridges. It is now the opportunity to organise the Third International Conference Footbridge 2008 in Porto, a city with 1000 years of history, grown along the river and mouth of Douro. This demanding river has from the 19th century inspired the construction of outstanding bridges. The obvious need of pedestrian links between the two margins in the context of urban renewal and the current search of high expertise solutions to overcome the river Douro, provide therefore the mot for this third International Conference Footbridge 2008, organised by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and OTUA. Preceded by a Workshop focusing on the Worldwide Experience in the Dynamic Design of Footbridges, Footbridge 2008 includes about 140 contributions from 23 different countries on the various topics related: Planning and Conceptual Design; Structural Analysis and Behaviour; Dynamics, Vibrations and Control; and New Materials and Innovations. The abstracts and the full contributions, including 7 keynotes, are assembled in this book of abstracts and in the CD-ROM Proceedings, respectively. We should like to take the opportunity to express our sincere thanks to the authors and participants for their contributions, to the members of the Scientific Committee for their dedicated work, and to the Organising Committee for the time and effort devoted to making Footbridge 2008 a successful event. The Footbridge 2008 Proceedings could not have been completed without the excellent work of the Conference Secretariat.
