Abstract (EN): The development of cancer has long been recognised as a multistage process involving, in most cases, an accumulation of multiple genetic alterations. Although the precise nature and sequence of those changes remain largely unclear, several abnormalities affecting both the structure and expression of proto-oncogenes, tumour suppressor genes and other genes have been identified. Gastric cancer is no exception concerning the occurrence of such alterations. TP53 and APC inactivation as well as ERBB2, MET and SAM activation have been frequently observed in gastric carcinoma. In the present paper we will review the multiple factors possibly involved in gastric tumourigenesis, with particular emphasis on mucins, trefoil peptides and their likely interaction.
