Abstract (EN): The incidence of skin cancer has been increasing steadily, and a direct correlation with sun exposure has long been recognised. Primary prevention actions, mainly directed at children, are important to promote behavioural changes regarding sun exposure. A questionnaire-based enquiry, followed by a sensitisation action, with distribution of didactic material, was carried out in several private and public schools, in June 2003. A significant number of children reported the existence of only a few trees at their schools' playground and the practice of outdoor gymnastics during risky hours. Although they admitted to usually applying sunscreens when going to the beach, this was not a normal practice when going to school on sunny days. A history of sunburn was reported by 53% of the children. We found some changes in behaviour after the summer holidays following the sensitisation action, which emphasizes the importance of this type of campaigns.
