Abstract (EN): The incidence of skin cancer has increased over the past decades and its relationship with incorrect sun exposure behaviour is well known. It is relevant to know the habits of the population exposed in leisure areas, where it is suggested that campaigns for skin cancer primary prevention be made. A survey about sun exposure habits was carried out at the entrance of four Portuguese beaches in the summer of 2003, followed by delivery of educational material. The analysis of these data revealed behavioural differences among the beachgoers, their sex and socio-economic status. The number of sunburn episodes was significant and higher in populations with higher academic qualifications. The sun protection measures reported by the people in all the study beaches relied mainly on the use of sunscreens rather than protective clothing and hats, or limited exposure at UV-peak hours. Moreover, the sunscreens were not adequately used as recommended. The knowledge of the sun exposure habits of our population is essential to help guiding future primary prevention campaigns and increase awareness of the population as to secondary prevention.
