Abstract (EN): EUCOWE dataset was used to measure the length of operating hours in manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries in Portugal. The direct measure is obtained from the employers' response when asked about the number of hours their establishment operated in the reference week. Past employment growth does not significantly influence the length of operations. The coefficient of the proportion of temporary workers is negative, indicating that higher proportions of temporary workers are associated with shorter operating hours. Shorter working weeks may be negotiated as part of collective bargaining procedures. The distribution of normal working hours in the establishments surveyed reflects the legal and contractual length of normal hours, whose distribution has a marked peak in the interval between 35 and 40 hours per week. The only exception is shift work that is used by 6.4% of the establishments in this sector and involves 13.5% of the corresponding workforce.
