Abstract (EN): Preeclampsia (PE) is a pathological condition of the placenta that affects the mother and can adversely influence the feto-placental unit. Placental growth factor (PIGF) is synthetized in the placenta, playing a role in placental development and function. Our aim was clarify the role of PIGF in PE, by studying and comparing the PlGF levels of maternal blood and umbilical cord blood (UCB) in normal and preeclamptic (PEc) pregnancies. Our data suggest a placental dysfunction in PE, as showed by the significantly decreased levels of PlGF in maternal and UCB. The reduced PIGF in PEc mothers seems to be associated with a disturbance in the uteroplacental unit, as suggested by the significant positive correlation between maternal and fetal PlGF values.
