Abstract (EN): Exposure of red blood cells (RBC) to oxygen metabolites produced by inflammatory cells may account for RBC damage, expressed by an increase in membrane bound haemoglobin (MBH) and by an abnormal band 3 profile. Our aim was to evaluate the maternal and fetal RBC damage in normal and preeclamptic (PEc) pregnancies, by studying band 3 profile and MBH. We found a significantly higher RBC damage in PE, as showed by higher MBH in pregnant women and in their sons, and by a different band 3 profile in the mothers. Moreover, we found that band 3 profile and MBH were significantly different for mothers and sons, suggesting a higher RBC damage in fetus. Our data suggest that an enhanced oxidative stress in PE mothers induces a higher RBC damage, which is also expressed in their PEc sons.
