Abstract (EN):
The problem of vertical equilibrium of tied-back flexible retaining walls is discussed and the peculiarities of Berlin-type walls are presented. Modelling excavations supported by Berlin-type walls using finite elements is described. A numerical case study with marginal vertical stability conditions due to pile buckling is analysed and its results are compared with those obtained from a different analysis of the same case, where buckling is not allowed. The importance of this failure mechanism is emphasised and a few conclusions are taken.
