Resumo (PT): O artigo analisa o conto de Machado de Assis “Pai contra mãe” e reflete sobre a visão do mundo escravocrata que lhe serve de contexto, interrogando também o modo como a liberdade e os seus limites estão representados no texto. Num segundo momento, estuda brevemente a adaptação livre da narrativa feita por Sérgio Bianchi em 2005 no filme Quanto vale ou é por quilo?.

Abstract (EN): The paper analyses Machado de Assis’s short story “Pai contra mãe” and reflects on the vision of the slave world that serves as its context, also interrogating the way in which freedom and its limits are represented in the text. Secondly, it briefly studies the free adaptation of the narrative made by Sérgio Bianchi in 2005 in the film Quanto vale ou é por quilo?.
