Mission: | The Science Education Unit is a structure supporting the managing bodies of the Faculty of Sciences in their mission to promote the Teaching and Communication of Exact and Natural Sciences, including teacher training, statutorily established as one of the Faculty's responsibilities. |
Description: | The Unit comprises professors from the Faculty's Departments. Therefore, the unit's physical structure spreads across the whole Faculty of Sciences, in a close relationship with the specific activities from each disciplinary area and its teaching.
Together with professors' offices, classrooms and workrooms, there are specific laboratories for the teaching practice, dedicated to the initial and continuous training of science teachers. Research currently developed by the members of the unit is focused on the science teaching domain, an area of increasing social importance nowadays.The commitment to high quality scientific teaching demands specific research in this domain and solid teacher training. For its past and present, the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto combines a very robust specific training in the disciplinary areas with a contextualized and attentive bond to the school and the educational challenges, designing a promising future in scientific education. This Unit has a strong link with basic and continuous teacher training, being closely involved in master and doctorate programs related to science teaching. |
