The Dean's duties are:
- Representing FCUP in the Senate, on the Board of Directors, before other UP bodies, and abroad.
- Appointing the Deputy Director pursuant to Article 22(3) of the FCUP Statutes.
- Chairing the Executive Council, Directing the Services.
- Chairing the Scientific Council.
- Answering requests by the Rector or the General Council, within the deadlines and according to the needs of the University's management, specifically regarding strategic plans, budgets and reports on activities and accounts.
- Approving the academic calendar and timetable, in agreement with the Scientific Council and the Pedagogical Council. Ensuring compliance with the decisions of the central governing bodies.
- Ensuring compliance with laws, statutes, and regulations.
- Enforcing disciplinary power as delegated by the Rector.
- Drawing up and submitting to the Council of Representatives the proposals for FCUP's strategic and action plans for the four-year mandate, in agreement with the Scientific Council and the Pedagogical Council, in line with the University's strategic plan. Proposing the general guidelines for FCUP's scientific, pedagogical, and financial plans to the Council of Representatives, in line with the plans approved by the General Council and other competent bodies of the University. Drawing up and submitting proposals for the budget and activities plan to the Council of Representatives, as well as the activities and accounts reports, in accordance with the plans approved by the General Council. Proposing the creation, transformation, or extinction of organisational sub-units of FCUP to the Council of Representatives, after consulting the Scientific Council. Submitting proposals for organisational regulations on FCUP's services to the Council of Representatives.
- Approving the setting up or closing down of departmental sections, after consulting the Scientific Council, following a proposal from the respective Departmental Council.
- Drawing up conclusions on the evaluation reports of the research units that are part of FCUP and those in which FCUP professors and researchers participate.
- Suggesting to the Rector the opening of tenders for teaching and scientific research careers, following a proposal from the Scientific Council. Proposing the creation or modification of cycles of studies to the Rector, in agreement with the Scientific Council and the Pedagogical Council. Proposing to the Rector the maximum numbers of new admissions for the admission procedures for the courses, in agreement with the Scientific Council.
- Managing student social support instruments, in cooperation with the Social Action Services, and drawing up tuition payment plans that may facilitate attendance and progression in higher education.
- Appointing Course Directors following a recommendation from the Scientific Council. Appointing Department Directors following a proposal from the Department Council. Sending the regulations for courses leading to degrees, approved by the Scientific Committees of the corresponding departments, to the Rector, following a proposal from the Scientific Committee.
- Approving regulations for courses not leading to a degree, in agreement with the Scientific Council.
- Issuing the regulations necessary for the successful operation of FCUP.
- Approving departmental regulations. Approving the distribution of teaching duties, taking into account their viability from a financial and operational point of view.
- Appointing and hiring staff in every capacity.
- Collecting and managing revenue and authorising expenditure and payments.
- Ensuring that the appropriate human, physical and financial resources are available for the effective exercise of the competences entrusted to the faculty's management bodies.
- Sending the Rector proposals for the creation or alteration of academic awards, following consultation with the Scientific Council and the Pedagogical Council.
- Deciding on the acceptance of movable assets.
- Appointing and dismissing, in accordance with the law and with the statutes, FCUP’s services directors.
- Delegating competences to the members of the Executive Board and heads of departments as deemed necessary and appropriate for a more efficient management.
- Creating non-statutory committees in sectors considered relevant to the proper functioning of FCUP,
- Performing any duties delegated by the Rector. Performing any other duties required by law or the statutes that are not assigned to another FCUP body.
- Approving the creation of FCUP's Competence Centres, after a favourable assessment by the Scientific Council, under the terms of article 57(3) of FCUP's Statutes.
