Objectives
Aims:
- Provide knowledge of the main functional classes of organic molecules, focusing on their nomenclature, three-dimensional structure, reactivity, synthesis methods and mechanisms of the main reactions in which they are involved.
Learning outcomes and competences
When finishing the course, students should have already gained:
- full understanding of the relationship between structure and reactivity of organic molecules and be able to predict reactions of the different functional classes covered by the syllabus;
- awareness on the presence and relevance of organic chemistry in nature, in biology, and in the most diverse dimensions of human activity (daily life, biomedical and pharmaceutical science and technology, novel products and materials, etc.).
Working method
Presencial
Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)
It is
highly recommended that the students have previously been approved to the Química I course.

Teaching methods and learning activities
1 - Lectures (2.5 h/week)
The different subjects will be presented by using multimedia tools. The slides will be available in the web page of the discipline (Moodle), as well as complementary documents.
2 - Practical classes (2 h/week, compulsory classes)
Students will work individually, to solve problems related to the topics thaught in this course. At the beginning of each class (predictably, classes 3 to 12), each student will resolve a written mini-test (30 minutes) on topics previously addressed. The remainder of the class will be devoted to accompanied resolution/discussion of problems related to the programme of the course.
Important: A total of 10 mini-tests is planned, each of which contributing in 5% to the final classification of the student (meaning that the average classification of the tests will count for 50% of the final mark obtained in this course). Each mini-test that a student fails to do will have a 0 (zero) mark.

Eligibility for exams
Practical classes are mandatory.
The students cannot miss more than 3 practical classes (1/4 of the number of practical sessions on a basis of 12 weeks).
Calculation formula of final grade
The final grade (NF) is given by two parameters, namely, the average grade of the 10 mini-tests done in the practical classes (NTP) and the grade in the final exam (NEF)
:
NF = 0.50 x NTP + 0.50 NEF
There is no minimum grade required at either NTP or NEF to pass the course, but a minimum NF mark of 9.5 plus frequency of the practical classes are required for approval.
The NTP grade cannot be improved.
Examinations or Special Assignments
Not applicable.
Internship work/project
Not applicable.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Students with special statutes
who opt by not attending the practical classes will have NF = NEF.
Students with special statutes
who opt by attending the practical classes will be evaluated by the general regime.
Classification improvement
It will be only possible to improve the NEF grade (exam).
The final classification of students who take a grade improvement exam will be calculated according to the calculation formula in effect during the academic year in which they passed the Curricular Unit.
Observations
Not applicable.
