Objectives
At the end of this UC each student should be:
- able to understand the basic aspects of running a research laboratory/diagnostic/industry or another, according to the location where the work takes place.
- Understand the fundamentals of the options taken in the course of the work, including choice of methods, techniques, equipment, experimental models (or others), depending on the type of work involved.
- Execute the set of techniques that he/she was taught.
- Make a correct and critical analysis of the results obtained in the experimental project.
- Produce a written report on the laboratory activities.
- Present orally the work performed, with visual support.
- Contextualize the work performed, demonstrate ability to conduct bibliographic search, to interpret and integrate the information. This last competence is predominant in case of performing only a written work designated Monograph (see "Teaching Methods").
- Carry out an ethical self-assessment of the project.
Learning outcomes and competences
The teaching methodology used is mainly tutorial. In the beginning of the project the supervisor should give a closer monitoring of the work but along the project the student must acquire increasing autonomy and independence either during the course of practical work and in the preparation of the written report. This form of supervision aims to prepare the student for future professional integration or pursue to a more advanced study cycle, such as Master.
Working method
Presencial
Program
Each project or Monograph has a particular theme. The tittle and program of work are previously established by the supervisor, might have been discussed with the student, who presents the project in the form of summary indicating the subject, brief introduction, main methodologies to be used and relevant references.
Mandatory literature
Lehninger Albert L.;
Biochemistry. ISBN: 0-87901-047-9 (Selected papers)
Comments from the literature
Selected articles according the scientific area of experimental work
Teaching methods and learning activities
Each student will be integrated in a research Lab both in academia, industrial or diagnostics environment, where he/she will perform the work according to a plan previously submitted by the supervisor and approved by the scientific commission of the Biochemistry degree.
In some cases it will be possible to do instead of monography, without a laboratorial component, where the emphasis will be on acquiring bibliography search competencies, treating statistical data, dealing with science sociological aspects, etc. Also in this case, the plan has to be previously approved by the scientific commission of the Biochemistry degree.

Eligibility for exams
The students have to submit the ethical self-assessment form, duly completed and signed by the supervisor, and a written report accompanied by a favorable information from the supervisor, within the defined deadlines.
Calculation formula of final grade
The final classification is decided by a jury, specially chosen for each student, which includes at least one member of the Scientific Commission of the Biochemistry degree, the supervisor and an examiner, in a total of three to four elements. The evaluation of the Project/Internship is based on: i) the supervisor's assessment of the student's performance; ii) the intermediate introduction, delivered by the end of April; iii) the final report; iv) an examination consisting of an oral presentation and a discussion of the report, each with a time limit of fifteen minutes.
The final classification will be calculated based on the following formula: Intermediate introduction (10%) + Final report (20%) + Presentation and public defense of the internship (15%) + Laboratory work (55%).
Examinations or Special Assignments
Does not apply
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
In view of the type of UC, the students with special evaluaton regimes can only do a monography, upon agreement with the scientific commission of the Biochemistry degree.
Classification improvement
According to paragraph 3 of article 10 of GENERAL REGULATIONS FOR EVALUATION OF STUDENTS FIRST CYCLES, CYCLES OF INTEGRATED MASTER'S STUDIES AND SECOND CYCLES OF U.PORTO "can not be held improvement rating for dissertations and reports of internships or projects."
Observations
The Project/Internship report must be written according to the rules provided in Moodle.
