The main goal of this course is to provide practical skills, by including the student in a project of scientific research and/or research and development, in academia or in a company, for the students to be well prepared to start their professional activity or forfurther studies in a Master course in Chemistry or interdisciplinary areas.
The students should train their skills in:
- Laboratorory, instrumental and/or computational techniques
- Laboratory organization and planning;
- Team work;
- Interpretation and analysis of experimental results;
- Bibliography search;
- Writing a scientific or technical report;- Oral presentation.
The students must have taken, and preferably been approved, to all the mandatory courses of the 1st and 2nd years of the B.Sc. in Chemistry.
Project: Each student will have an individual research plan in one of the research areas of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department.
Internship: The internship is individual. The work plan is proposed by the company responsible for the internship and must be approved by the Scientific Committee of the BSc. In Chemistry.
In this course the teaching has a tutoring format, in which each student or group of students has one supervisor (or one supervisor and one co-supervisor) that follows their progress and supervises the students in their experimental work. The supervisoralso tutors the students in writing the final report and in the preparation of the oral presentation. The students must execute the experimental work defined by the supervisor, working an average of at least 23 hours per week to the project. At least 12hours per week out of these 23 hours must be used in experimental activities, with the remaining time used in literature search, organization of the experimental results and planning, analysis and interpretation of experimental data, preparation ofintermediate reports or of the final report and other activities deemed by the supervisor to be necessary to accomplish the goals of the work plan.
The students that choose to do an internship in a company will be tutored by the person responsible of the internship in the company and by a supervisor from de Chemistry and Biochemistry Department (DQB). The supervisor will follow the progress ofthe internship in the company, with regular meetings with the student. The supervisor in the DQB is also responsible for supervising the writing of the final report and the preparation of the oral presentation. The students must work an average of at least23 hours per week in the internship, including all the activities of preparation of the report and oral presentation required, and also all the activities that the supervisor and the company tutor deem necessary to complete the work plan.

To be accepted for the final evaluation (presentation and discussion of the report), the students cannot miss more than 25% of the pratical activities defined by the supervisor. The students must also accomplish the goals set in the work plan and prepare a report of the project/internship.
The final grade of the student will be the weighted average of the grade obtained in the public defense of the project/internship report (10%), the grade of the project/internship report (25%) and the work performed in the project/internship (65%). Thesethree components are mandatory. The evaluation is done by a jury composed of three to four members, including the supervisor or the co-supervisor and one report examiner. At least two of the members of the jury must be professors at DQB.The public defense of the project/internship report will start with an oral presentation performed by the student, with a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 20 minutes, followed by a period of 30 minutes (maximum) of discussion with the reportexaminer. The remainder elements of the jury may question the student, in a total period of 10 minutes (maximum). The total duration of the exam must be at least 30 minutes.
