Assuming that the student already has a strong foundation in analytical chemistry and in biochemistry, this course is an overview of the science of modern analytical and instrumental techniques with particular emphasis on techniques relevant to measurements in biochemistry and biology. The course also covers the fundamental theory upon which the bioanalytical measurements are made.
The student will acquire fundamental concepts and practical knowledge of a set of instrumental techniques of analysis with relevant biochemical or biomedical application. It will be in touch with recent developments related to methods for the identification and structural analysis of biological macromolecules, which may be useful in stages, research or future work experience.
1. Capillary electrophoresis
2. Chromatography of peptides and proteins
3. Mass spectrometry of biomolecules
4. DNA chips
5. Validation of bioanalytical methods
Lectures and theoretical-practical classes, critical analysis and discussion of scientific papers and other documents related to the various program topics; selection, presentation and discussion of a scientific paper (group); invited lectures and study visits.
At the beginning of each lecture, which follows an eminently expository methodology, the programmatic items discussed in class are presented. The theoretical-practical classes follow two different models, according to the program taught in lectures. The content relating to chapters 2,4, are discussed based on a dynamic query, analysis and interpretation of research articles related to each topic. The content relating to chapters 1, 3 and 5 are based on in-depth presentation of case studies and problem solving. The interaction and student participation is encouraged in all classes (lectures and theoretical-practical).

The evaluation will be continuous and will consider participation in discussion activities scheduled. Thus, the final grade of this course will have the following components: Final Exam (60%); Participation/"students' corner" (20%); presentation/discussion of scientific paper (20%).
An improvement in the classification of the Examination component can only be made in the Appeal Season..
