Theory Classes
1 Complementary aspects of transition metal chemistry: elements of block d and f. Structure and isomerism; chemical bonding models.
2 Elements and symmetry operations; applications.
3 Electronic spectroscopy; luminescence; magnetic properties.
4 Mechanisms of inorganic reactions: ligand substitution and electron transfer reactions.
5 Organometallic chemistry. Structure, ligand types and reactivity of organometallic compounds - valence layer electron counting.
6 General principles of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Enantioselective catalysis. Examples of industrially relevant homogeneous and heterogeneous phase catalytic cycles.Practice classes
1 Problem solving on the subjects taught in lectures.
2 The laboratory classes have as programmatic objective the execution of small laboratory projects, for synthesis and characterization of transition metal compounds and their immobilization in materials. Several physicochemical techniques will be used to characterize the transition metal compounds and their materials. List of projects to be carried out:
Project 1: Synthesis and characterization of Cu (II) complex with acetylacetonate. Preparation of magnetic nanoparticles. Immobilization of Cu (II) complexes in prepared nanomaterials.
Project 2: Synthesis and characterization of the VO (II) complex with acetylacetonate. Immobilization of metal complexes in functionalized silica.
Project 3: Synthesis and characterization of [Mn(porphyrin)]. Immobilization on carbon nanotubes (CNTs).
Project 4: Synthesis and characterization of a nickel (II) complex. Immobilization of [Ni(salen)] in zeolite NaY.
Project 5: Synthesis and characterization of multinuclear macrocyclic complexes of Fe (II) and Cu (II) (metallacrowns).
Project 6: Preparation and characterization of a [Mn(salen)] complex. Immobilization on bentonite clay.
Project 7: Synthesis and characterization of copper (II) complexes. Immobilization of [Cu(salen)] in a mesoporous carbon material (CMK-3).
At the end of the lab classes students have to write a report about the work done and have to give a 10 min oral presentation about the work done. Students are required to use the English language to make oral presentation slides and whenever possible to make oral presentation in English.

Obtaining participation to the course:
1 The students may not miss more than 1/4 of the number of classes.
2. The students must have a pratical classification equal or higher than 9.5.
The assessment of student achievement in the Advanced Inorganic Chemistry course is made by three components:
1 Theoretical part
The students will have two written tests, during the semester. The theroretical grade, T, will be the average of the classifications of theses tests. T must be ≥ 8.0- The students that have a final grade ≤9.5, or that want to improve their grade, can improve the classification of one of the two tests in the normal exam, or they can do a global exam in the appeal exam.
2 Laboratory work: 40%. The Lab grade (PL) has 3 components with different weights: the Practical Information (IP), Report (R) and Oral Presentation (AO), according to the following algorithm: PL = 0 , 3 × IP + 0.35 × R + 0.35 × AO. The practical grade cannot be less than 9.5.
Final grade(≥9,5) = 60% T + 40% PL.
If student-workers do not attend laboratory and problem-solving classes, they will have to take a final exam and a practical exam during normal and special seasons.
The final grade will be: 60% final exam + 40% practical exam.
If the working student has practical attendance, he / she goes to the ordinary students' evaluation regime.
There are no precedents required, but students are advised to have finished the Inorganic Chemistry course (Q2004)
