Objectives

Understanding the roles and procedures performed by network and system administrators. Presentation of general principles that are further illustrated and consubstantiated with laboratory practice, with the implementation and maintenance of some concrete examples of flexible services in critical contexts with simulated faults.

Learning outcomes and competences

The course (curricular unity) aims to relate theoretical concepts with practical installation and maintenance of computational and network services, considered essential in a network of well-managed information systems.
The student should acquired competences in linux shell, remote access to systems, access control, file systems and storage, backups, system logging and general concepts of virtualization.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course is based on lectures and hands-on classes about concepts considered to be essential for a full understanding of the tools currently employed for system administration. The students get firsthand experience with these tools in a lab controlled simulation environments specially designed for the practice of system administration activities.

The course is further sustained by practical lab classes where the students use a network infrastructure with storage and information system where they will apply the concepts, tools and good practices for installing and managing the serices discussed in the lectures. Each group of students will have access to virtual machines in order to develop these practicals and the assignment.

Students are encouraged to practice remote administration of the virtual machines (by the means of SSH and VNC).

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade is based on:

  • theo evaluation (NE): 20 marks

Final grade is: NF =  NE

This weighting applies to all exams: normal, "recurso", special season, last year student or grade improvement.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
