Objectives

Acquisition of laboratory skills in the synthesis and characterization of inorganic compounds using laboratory unit operations and instrumental techniques (conductivity, potentiometry, fluorescence, UV/Vis and FTIR-ATR spectroscopy) to characterize the compounds synthesized. Acquisition of ability to adapt to new situations and to interpret results.


Learning outcomes and competences

 After completing this laboratory students should be able to:



  • prepare simple inorganic compound which have various applications; know how to writhe the chemical equation of the synthesis reaction of the prepared compounds; know the structure of the prepared compounds



  • understand the principle that govern the synthesis of coordinative compounds.



  • understand the principle that govern the electronic spectra and to correlate those with the UV-VIS spectra of the coordination compounds.



  • know how to survey the literature using scientific search engines



  • know how to put together a scientific report in a journal paper format and how to make a scientific presentation.


Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

The studants must have attended and preferably have had approval to Chemistry I and II and Chemistry LaboratorY I and II.

Program

Safety rules in an inorganic chemistry laboratory. Technical/scientific reports elaboration. Introduction to instrumental techniques applied to inorganic compounds characterization: conductivity, UV/Vis and FTIR spectroscopy, fluorescence, potenciometry. Synthesis and characterization of inorganic compounds.
Answer to online quizzes about the lab work to be done.
Experimental performance of practical laboratory work and related reports.

Teaching methods and learning activities

In addition to formal lessons in the laboratory (with provision of necessary elements to achieve the practical work, including bibliographic references), the application of knowledge already acquired in the correct interpretation of results and the ability to adapt to new situations and solving practical problems is promoted.

Eligibility for exams

Presence in ¾ of the total number of laboratory sessions. Classification equal or higher than 10.0 for the practical examination, which must necessarily take place in classes of the course unit. Students must also have 10.0 on oral presentation and online quizzes.

Calculation formula of final grade

The approval in this discipline will be conditioned by the following requirements:



  1. Mandatory attendance in practical classes (the number of absences can not exceed 25% of the planned number of classes);

  2. At least two thirds of the reports of the practical works must be accepted;

  3. Positive practical evaluation (equal to or greater than 10.0 (CP));

  4. Classification equal or higher than  10.0 in the oral presentation and online questionnaires (CO);




Final classification (NP):



  1. The final classification will be calculated giving a weight of 70% to the practical classification (CP) and 30% to the classification obtained in the oral test and online questionnaires (CO). 



  2. The practical classification will be calculated taking into account the performance of the Student in the practical sessions and the average of the notes of the reports. Failure to carry out any practical work and the non-delivery of a report imply the assignment of a score equal to zero values for each of these evaluation elements. 



NP = 0,7×CP + 0,3×CO

There are no special works or exams.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students in special situations who can not attend laboratory classes must perform a practical exam. The final classification will be calculated by assigning a weight of 70% to the practical exam classification and 30% to the classification obtained (equal or greater than 10.0) in the oral presentation and online quizzes.

Final score improvement:

Improvement of grade can only be obtained by complete attendance of the UC in the next school year.
