Teaching language

Suitable for English-speaking students

Objectives

Development of laboratory skills and presentation, treatment, interpretation and discussion of experimental results, individually and in group.

Integration in the laboratory experiments of the kthe concepts of chemical equilibrium, thermochemistry, chemical kinetics and electrochemistry, presented on the courses Chemistry I (Q1009) and Chemistry II (Q1011).

Learning outcomes and competences

Ability to perform the most usual operations in a chemistry laboratory, as well as to treat and discuss the obtained results.

Working method

Presencial

Program

This course consists of practical classes, in which the following laboratory experiments are carried out.

1 - Titration of an aqueous solution of HCl with borax

2 - Recycling of aluminium

3 - Determination of the rate constant of the methyl acetate hydrolysis reaction

4 - "Iodine clock" reaction – method of initial rates

5 - Determination of the molar enthalpy of formation of solid ammonium chloride

6 - Electrochemistry experiments: galvanic cells and corrosion

Eligibility for exams

The classes of this course are mandatory. To obtain eligibility the student needs to attend 75% of the classes, and have a positive grade on 2/3 of the practical laboratory assignments.

Calculation formula of final grade

Due to its practical character, the course relies only on distributed assessment, and has no final exams.

The student must obtain positive grades in at least 2/3 of the laboratory assignments. The grade for each practical assignment (group work) is calculated based on the preparation, laboratory performance and written report. The average of the grades obtained on the practical assignments is NTP.

As additional evaluation element, each student having NTP ≥ 10 will have an individual practical assessment which grade, NPI, must be ≥ 8 to be approved. The final grade, NF, is calculated as

NF = 0,50 NTP + 0,50 NPI

To obtain approval, the following requirements must be fulfilled: NTP ≥ 10, NPI ≥ 8 and NF ≥ 10.

Classification improvement

Given the laboratory nature of this curricular unit, the different assessment components can only be improved by a new frequency of the curricular unit.
