Objectives

The Chemistry Lab (Q1005) course comprises a set of practical works, involving several experimental techniques and procedures.

Learning outcomes and competences

Providing the students with a basic training in chemistry laboratory techniques.
It is intended that at the end of the semester the student has acquired the following basic skills: to be able to perform correctly a set of basic unit operations in laboratory chemistry; to be able to plan and execute laboratory experiments in chemistry; interpret experimental results and prepare written reports of experimental activities.

Program

PROGRAMME:

PRESENTATION OF THE SCOPE, RULES AND EVALUATION METHODS - 1st class

1. Introduction to the course. Safety rules in the lab.
2. Introduction to basic chemistry lab operations.

LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS (2 h/week) - following classes

PL1 – Preparation of solutions.
PL2 – Strong Acid-base titration.
PL3 - Weak Acid-base titration.
PL4 – Thin-layer chromatographic identification of active ingredients in pain-killers.
PL5 – Destilation of a water-acetone mixture.
PL6 – Purification by recrystallization.

FINAL INDIVIDUAL EVALUATION

- individual practical examination, where each student will be randomly attributed one laboratorial activity, to take place in the last couple of weeks of the academic year.

Laboratory practices and online classes.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Trabalho escrito 40,00
Trabalho laboratorial 60,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 53,00
Frequência das aulas 28,00
Total: 81,00

Eligibility for exams

In this practical course it is mandatory to attend classes.

In order to be admitted for final individual evaluation, and apply for approval at this course, students must attend a minimum of 75% of the total number of planned classes, and get a positive assessment on at least 4 out of the 6 laboratory activities planned.

Calculation formula of final grade

Continuous assessment without final exam.

Final mark (NF):

NF = 0,60 x NP + 0,40 x NEI

where NP is the averaged evaluation from lab experiments and respective mini-reports, and NEI is the mark obtained in an individual practical examination, where each student will have to execute a laboratorial activity (randomly attributed).

Only students having complied with the attendance requisites specified in the previous field, and having scored an NP ≥ 8 will be admitted to the individual practical exam. Approval to the course is only possible when NF ≥ 9.5

Examinations or Special Assignments

All omitted and unpredicted cases will be addressed on a case by case basis.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Working students unable to attend the laboratory classes will have to perform the final individual practical exam (NEI), and NF = NEI. The same will apply to students whose absences are institutionally considered as justified.

Classification improvement

Given the exclusive experimental nature of the Course, final marks can only be enhanced by means of a new enrollment in the course, in a subsequent year.
