Objectives

The Chemistry Lab (Q1005) course comprises a set of practical works, involving several experimental techniques and procedures.

Learning outcomes and competences

Providing the students with a basic training in chemistry laboratory techniques.
It is intended that at the end of the semester the student has acquired the following basic skills: to be able to perform correctly a set of basic unit operations in laboratory chemistry; to be able to plan and execute laboratory experiments in chemistry; interpret experimental results and prepare written reports of experimental activities.

Program

PROGRAMME:

PRESENTATION OF THE SCOPE, RULES AND EVALUATION METHODS - 1st class

1. Introduction to the course. Safety rules in the lab.
2. Introduction to basic chemistry lab operations.

LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS (2 h/week) - following classes

PL1 – Preparation of solutions.
PL2 – Strong Acid-base titration.
PL3 - Weak Acid-base titration.
PL4 – Thin-layer chromatographic identification of active ingredients in pain-killers.
PL5 – Destilation of a water-acetone mixture.
PL6 – Purification by recrystallization.
PL7 – Extraction of caffein from an energetic beverage.

INDIVIDUAL MID-TERM AND FINAL TERM INDIVIDUAL EVALUATIONS:

Written individual tests on the fundamentals of laboratory experiments will be carried out according to the calendar to be timely announced through the Moodle platform.

Individual practical test will take place in the last practical class of the Course.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Laboratory practices and online classes.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Teste 40,00
Trabalho laboratorial 60,00
Total: 100,00

Eligibility for exams

In this course it is mandatory to comply with the attendance in practical classes.

The students must attend a minimum of 75% of the total number of laboratory classes to be admitted for evaluation, and get a positive assessment on at least 5 out of the 7 laboratory activities planned.

Calculation formula of final grade

Continuous assessment without final exam.

Final mark:

NF = 0,40 x NT + 0,60 x NPF

where NT is the average mark for the two individual mid-term evaluation written tests, and NPF is the final practical mark, calculated from the averaged evaluation from lab experiments (NTP) and from the final individual practical exam (NAP).

Approval requires NF ≥ 10, NTP ≥ 10 and NAP ≥ 8.

Examinations or Special Assignments

All omitted and unpredicted cases will be addressed by means of an oral exam.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Working students unable to attend the laboratory classes will have to perform the final individual practical exam (NAP), and NF = NAP. The same will apply to students whose absences are institutionally considered as justified.

Classification improvement

Given the exclusive experimental nature of the Course, final marks can only be enhanced by means of a new enrollment in the course, in a subsequent year.
