Objectives

Aims:

- Students shoud aquire knowledge about the various families of organic molecules in what concerns their nomenclature, reactivity, reaction mechanisms and methods of synthesis.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students should
- understand the relationship between structure and reactivity of organic molecules and be able to predict reactions of the different families of compounds;

- be aware of the presence of organic chemistry in their dayly life (medicine, novel products/materials, etc.).

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Students should have been approved in UC Química I/Fundamentos de Quimica.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical lessons will be presented in Power-point. Slides will be provided to the students in advance.

TP lessons: resolution of problems featuring the topics of the theoretical lessons.

Students will be devided into groups of 5-6. The exercises provided via Moodle, must be resolved individually as homework, and discussed amongst the group partners during the lesson. Each group shoud then resolve one of the problems of its exercise sheet and explain it to the other students.

Students will be evaluated for the work performed (self- and heteroevaluation).

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

designation Weight (%)
Participação presencial 20,00
Teste 80,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 6,00
Frequência das aulas 4,00
Total: 10,00

Eligibility for exams

TP lessons: Attendance is mandatory for this unit.

Participation in TP lessons, realization of 3 tests or final exam.

To be approved, the practical grade and the mean grade of the 3 tests/the grade of the exam must be ≥ 9,5.

Calculation formula of final grade

Realization of 3 tests minimum grade to be established by the teacher.

Final exam ≥ 9,5
Final mark must be ≥ 9,5

The final mark is determined as follows:

FM = ((T1+T2+T3)/3)*0,8 + PP*0,2 or

FM = NE*0,8 + PP*0,2

For the obtention of a final mark of 18 or higher an additional oral exam may be required.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

The mark will be the one obtained in the final exam.

Classification improvement

Chemistry course:

FM = NE*0,8 + PP*0,2

For the obtention of a final mark of 18 or higher an additional oral exam is required.
