The Chemistry Lab I (Q1003) course comprises a set of practical works, involving several experimental techniques and procedures.
Providing the students with a basic training in chemistry laboratory techniques.
It is intended that at the end of the semester the student has acquired the following basic skills: to be able to perform correctly a set of basic unit operations in laboratory chemistry; to be able to plan and execute laboratory experiments in chemistry; interpret experimental results and prepare written reports of experimental activities.
A1 – Theoretical-practical lessons (1 h / week)
1. Safety rules.
2. Errors and significant digits
2.1. Handling significant digits
2.2. Precision, accuracy and types of errors
2.3. Error propagation
2.4 Presenting final results
3. Calculations on solution concentrations
4. Acid-base titrations
5. Purification methods
5. Stoichiometric calculations on gases
6. Phase equilibria
7. Absorption of light and the Beer-Lambert Law
A2 – Lab classes (3 h /week)
1. Introduction to the course. Safety rules in the lab.
2. Introduction to basic chemistry lab operations.
3. Laboratory experiments:
PL1 – Preparation of solutions (2 classes).
PL2 – Acid-base titration (2 classes).
PL3 – Purification by recrystalization.
PL4 – Determination of the stoichiometry of a reaction.
PL5 – Destilation of a water-acetone mixture.
PL6 – Spectrophotometric determination of a food dye.
4. Discussion of results and reports.
5. Individual practical assessment.
Theoretical-practical lessons, laboratory classes and online classes.
designation | Weight (%) |
---|---|
Teste | 50,00 |
Trabalho laboratorial | 50,00 |
Total: | 100,00 |
In this course it is mandatory to comply with the attendance in practical classes.
The students must attend a minimum of 75% of the total number of laboratory classes to be admitted for evaluation.
Continuous assessment without final exam.
Final mark:
NF = 0.50 x NTP + 0.50 x NAP
where NTP is the average grade of all practical sessions and NAP is the individual lab assessment mark
Approval requires NTP ≥ 10 and NAP ≥ 8.
