Objectives

Sampling and sample treatment are of utmost importance steps in the analytical process, however they are also those for which the analyst is usually less prepared to deal with. Our aim with this subject is to introduce the tools and concepts that will allow to minimize the effect of sampling errors in the analytical result.

Learning outcomes and competences

Learning Outcomes:

Know the basics of sampling and different sampling methods;

know the basics of collecting air samples;

understand the basic principles of sampling soil;

understand the basic principles of sampling water;

understand the basic principles of storage and transportation of samples;

know the principles of treatment of samples taking into account the origin and objectives of analysis;

learn the basics of sample digestion wet and microwave;

know the basics of the methods of liquid-liquid extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, extraction and solid phase microextraction.

Skills:

Identify the source of errors in the different steps of the analytical process;

estimate the errors in the different steps of the analytical process;

distinguish enters random sampling and not random;

learn to identify and put into practice the different types of sampling (systematic, random, stratified);

calculating constants sampling;

know how to use tables sampling by attributes;

development and implementation of sampling plans;

handling, calibration and maintenance of air sampling pumps;

use of microwave digestion for treatment of samples.
