Laboratory skills development in the synthesis and characterization of inorganic compounds using laboratory unit operations and instrumental techniques (conductivity, UV/Vis and FTIR spectroscopy, magnetic moment measurement) to characterize the compounds synthesized. Acquisition of capacity to adapt to new situations and interpreting results.
Laboratory skills development in the synthesis and characterization of inorganic compounds. Capacity to adapt to new situations and interpreting results.
Safety rules in an inorganic chemistry laboratory. Technical/scientific reports elaboration. Introduction to instrumental techniques applied to inorganic compounds characterization: conductivity, UV/Vis and FTIR spectroscopy, magnetic moment measurement. Synthesis and characterization of inorganic compounds:
- Synthesis of tin(IV) iodide and determination of its purity.
- Synthesis and study of nickel(II) complexes.
- Synthesis and characterization of copper compounds with different oxidation states (Report elaborated as a scientific article following the publication rules of an international scientific journal).
In addition to formal lessons in the laboratory (with provision of necessary elements to achieve the practical work), the application of knowledge already acquired in the correct interpretation of results and the ability to adapt to new situations and solving practical problems is promoted.

Presence in ¾ the total number of laboratory sessions. Classification equal or higher than 10.0 for the practical examination, which must necessarily take place in classes of the course unit.
The approval in this course unit will be conditioned by the following requirements: 1 Presence in ¾ the total number of laboratory sessions. 2 At least 2/3 the total reports accepted. 3 Positive practical score (equal or higher than 10.0 ). 4 Classification equal or higher than 10.0 for the practical examination. 5 Classification equal or higher than 8.0 for the written examination. The final practical score is calculated as 75 % for the practical score and 25 % for the practical examination. The practical score is calculated as the average mark from the accepted reports and the evaluation of student at the laboratory sessions. Failure to perform any practical work and non-delivery of a report imply the assignment of zero values to each of these elements of evaluation. Final assessment: 80 % for the final practical score and 20 % for the written exam.
Final score improvement: Written exam. The final score is calculated as follows: 80 % for the practical score already obtained and 20 % for the written exam (equal or higher than 8.0).
