To develop the student’s skills for experimental work. This will be achieved through the accomplishment of physical chemistry experiments involving the determination of thermodynamic and kinetics parameters, analysis and interpretation of results and scientific reports writing.
To develop the student’s skills for experimental work. To improve the student’s skills in presentation of scientific results and its discussion. To develop critical thinking, encouraging critical analysis of the experimental results obtained and to develop report writing skills.
Laboratory Classes (4h):
Class 1 – Class rules.
Classes 2 to 4 – Laboratory experiments.
Class 5 – Written report 1.
Classes 6 to 8 – Laboratory experiments.
Class 9 – Written report 2.
Classes 10 and 11 – Laboratory experiments.
Class 12 – Discussion of laboratory experiments and written reports.
Class 13 – Final written report.
Laboratory Experiments:
1. Determination of the enthalpies of combustion of several aliphatic alcohols.
1. Determination of the enthalpy of combustion of naphthalene using a bomb calorimeter.
3. Determination of the vapour pressures of water by the isotonescope method. Calculation of the molar enthalpy of vaporization of water at 298.15 K.
4. Determination of the solid-liquid phase diagram for napthalene-biphenyl.
5. Determination of the thermodynamic parameters of ionization of acetic acid at 298.15 K, using pH measurements.
6. Determination of the thermodynamic parameters of ionization of benzoic acid in water and in water/ethanol mixtures, using pH measurements.
7. Application of conductimetric methods to the determination of the ionization constant of acetic acid.
8. Determination of the isoelectric point of glycylglycine, using conductimetric and potentiometric measurements. Determination of ionic conductivities.
9. Determination of the specific rate of a second order reaction and its variation with temperature.
10. Study of the ionic strength effect on the rate of reduction of hexacyanoferrate(III) by ascorbic acid.
Accomplishment of physical chemistry experiments, discussion of the experimental results, scientific reports writing and oral presentation.

NLAB is the overall laboratory mark equal to the average of the laboratory marks obtained on the laboratory practical sessions.
NR1 and NR2 are the marks obtained on the written reports R1 and R2.
NRF is the mark obtained on the final written report.
The final mark (NF) is calculated according to:
NF = 0.40 NLAB + 0.10 NR1 + 0.10 NR2 + 0.40 NRF
