Objectives

This course is an introduction to inorganic chemistry for biochemistry students. Students should achieve a strong knowledge of basic inorganic chemistry, with most relevance to the concepts, and to the application of the concepts in other courses and multidisciplinary topics.

Learning outcomes and competences

Basic skills in atomic and molecular structure: the students should be able to predict some chemical and physical properties of the elements based on the electronic configuration, predict the stucture of molecules and identify the type an characteristics of the chemical bond. The students should be able to relate the molecular structure with acid-base and redox properties. Finally, the students should be able to explain the chemical bonding in transition metal complexes ans predict some of their spectroscopic and magnetic properties. The students will also acquire basic skills in synthesis, UV/vis spectroscopy, and pH measurement.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course has a theoretical component where presentations on the main topics of the course are shown. Since the course is mainly formative, the topics are discussed with examples in the biochemistry area that allow the knowledge to be consolidated and integrated with other topics.
In the theoretical-pratical component, the students solve some proposed problems, in groups (3-5 students).
In the laboratory component the students work in group (2-3 students) and do five laboratory projects. The laboratory projects are chosen within the topics of the course. In addition to the lab unit operations, the students practice UV/vis spectrophotometry and potentiometry.

Eligibility for exams

Admission to the final exam is only possible for those students that have not missed more than 1/4 of the number of theoretical-practical and practical classes predicted. The students must have a positive evaluation on at least 2/3 of the laboratory projects and the final laboratory classification must also be positive (>=10). All the students must attend the theoretical-practical classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

Students with a final classification (N) higher or equal to 9,5(20) and with a theoretical evaluation of at least 8,0 (20) will pass.

The final classification is calculated as a weighted average of the pratical evaluation (P) and theoretical evaluation (T):

N = 0,20 x P + 0,80 x T

P is calculated as the average of the classifications obtained in the laboratory classes. The laboratory projects that were not completed will have a classification equal dto zero. Students that miss lab classes may complete the work in other class, provided that the class does not have an excessive number of students. They should contact the laboratory teacher to arrange for the substitution.
T is the weighted average of the tests (T1, T2 and T3)
T= 1/3 x (T1 + T2 + T3)
T1 and T2 will be in April and May, respectively, and T3 will take place in the day of the exam (regular). In the day of the exam the students may, if they wish, retry one of T1 or T2.
In case of failure, the students may retry 2 of T1, T2 or T3 (any combination) in the retrial exam.
The final grade is always calculated with the best grades obtained in each part T1, T2 and T3, with a zero classification for students that miss any of the tests.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Working students and students that are part of the Students Association, if they wish, may do a global final exam instead of the tests. In this case, the theoretical classification is the classification obtained in the final exam. If these students cannot attend the laboratory classes, they can do a final laboratory exam.

Classification improvement

Retrial for students that were successful in the course may be done either in the same year or the next year. In the first case, retrial should be done as described in the calculation of the classification. In the latter case, the student must do a global written exam. The classification of the laboratory part cannot be changed.
