Objectives

Consolidating and enrich the knowledge on networks previously gained by the students, providing them with the necessary skills for the configuration, maintenance and monitoring and troubleshooting IP networks with static or dynamic routing and the respective basic services.

Learning outcomes and competences

By completing this course, the students should be capable of configuring, managing and troubleshooting  small and medium dimension networks and the common associated services.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Reasonable knowledge of communication networks, particularly of the protocols of the TCP/IP stack.

Program

  • Configuration of Cisco routers using IOS.

  • Network configuration in Linux hosts.

  • Protocol analysis and monitoring (using packet capture and protocol analyzer tools).

  • Administration of routing protocols (RIP and OSPF) in Cisco routers.

  • Configuration of DNS servers (bind).

  • Configuration of DHCP servers (in Linux and Cisco routers).

  • NAT administration (Linux iptables, Cisco IOS).

  • Using SNMP for monitoring and configuring network equipment.

  • Network segmentation using VLANs.

Eligibility for exams

It is necessary to attend at least 3/4 of the classes (except for working students) and also to obtain a minimum overall grade of 40% in the lab assignments.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final grade = (PTG + EG) / 2, where

  • EG = Exam Grade (which must be, at least, 40% for passing)
  • LAG = Lab Assignments Grade (overall)
  • PTG = min(max(EG - 4, LAG), EG + 4))
