Objectives

Aims:

- Learn the basic technics (theory and practice) of preparation of solutions and of purification and analysis most commonly used in a chemistry lab.

- Be able to analyse the results;

- Acquire autonomy in the lab.

Learning outcomes and competences

Planning of the lab experiments: The students should be familiar to the technics learned and should know how and when to apply each one.

Working method

Presencial

Program

TP lessons - theoretical background for the lab experiments

1 - Preparation of solutions

2- Volumetry

3 - Thin layer chromatography

4 - Distilation

5 - Recristalyzation

6 - Extraction

Practical Lessons - Realization of lab experiments

1 - Preparation of solutions

2 - Acid-base titration (Determination of the conc. of a NaHO solution)

3 - Determination of the concentration of acetic acid in vinegar

4 - Identification of the active ingredient in analgesics by TLC

5 - Destilationof a mixture of water and acetone

6 - Purificatin by recristalyzation of benzoic acid using waer as solvent

7 - Extraction of cafeine from an energetic beverage

Teaching methods and learning activities

TP lessons - power point presentations: theoretical background for the lab experiments; resolution of related exercises.

Practical lessons - The lab experiments will be realized in groups of 2/3 students. Explanation of the lab experiment at the beginning of the lesson. Analysis and discussion of the results obtained.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Participação presencial 40,00
Teste 30,00
Trabalho laboratorial 30,00
Total: 100,00

Calculation formula of final grade

Attendance is mandatory for this unit.

Distributed evaluation without final exam.

Final Mark, FM, is composed by 3 different items: Practical information (PI), theoretical test (TT) and practical test (PT):

 FM= 0,4 x PI+ 0,3 x TT+ 0,3 x PT

(Practical information considers preparation and execution of the lab experiment).

To be approved FM must be ≥ 9,5.

There is no final exam.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Realization of theoretical and practical evaluation.

FM = 0,7 PT + 0,3 TT

To be approved FM must be ≥ 9,5.

Classification improvement

Grade improvement only possible through realization of another practical test (30%). Only students with positive mark (≥9,5) in each of the 3 components of evaluation are allowed to to apply for grade improvement.
