Objectives

The main goal of this course is to provide intensive formation about human and environmental safety. The program emphasis the way to handle or to use chemical, biological and radiological materials in order to implement and to maintain effective hygiene programs, preventing injury and illness.

Learning outcomes and competences

Capacity to deal with aspects relating to human and environmental safety (either of chemical, biological, or radiological nature) both in preventive and recuperative situations.

Chemical Safety Occupational Safety and Health. Safety in Chemistry Laboratories. General safe practices. Personal protective equipment. Chemical handling procedures. Storage of chemicals. Infrastructures of Labs. Identification of hazardous chemicals. Transport of hazardous products. Sinalização de segurança. Safety labelling. Laboratory waste management. Biological Safety Main characteristics of cell metabolism and of genetic mechanisms. Basic concepts in virology. Main concepts in biological safety. Risk groups. Safety levels. Design of laboratories. Biological safety cabinets. Infections acquired in the laboratories. Microbial agents that demand special precautions. Bacterial and fungal agents of safety levels II and III. Viruses and viral infections. Basic concepts in epidemiology. Control and prevention of viral infections. Viral agents of safety level IV. Biological war and microbial agents. Radioprotection Physical quantities and units in radioprotection: dosimetry in radioprotection.
Principles of radioprotection.
Physical properties of radiation alpha, beta and gamma.
