Objectives

This course aims to dig deeper into select topics of data networks. It goes wireless, mobile, deals with some operators technologies and some research proposals. There is a balance of lectures and lab work that touches the subjects of the course, so that the student is able to apply the theoretical knowledge in practical examples.

Learning outcomes and competences

The aim is that the student:

  • Strengthens  the knowledge acquired in past courses;
  • Is exposed to new concepts in communication networks and its applicability to the current context;
  • Develops network lab competences, in designing and using the technologies;
  • Is capable of researching and presenting new technologies being developed in the context of communication networks

Program

The course tries to go deeper on subjects touched previously on other courses and also to introduce some research proposals. As such, the program below is indicative as some research subjects may be introduced or replace the ones below:

  • Multimedia and networks
  • Wireless networks
  • IPv6
  • IP mobility
  • Multicast
  • MPLS
  • P2P, IPTv
  • Mobile Ad-hoc Nets (MANETs) (Wireless Sensor Networks, Body Area Networks, Vehicular Ad-Hoc Nets (VANETs), etc.)
  • Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs)
  • Content Centric Networks

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course will be divided in lectures and lab work. Lectures on the the program subjects will be given by the teacher and/or invited lecturers. The students will work on subjects during the course and will present the results of said work.

Work assignments will be:

  • a lab work regarding one of the technologies/themes presented. This will also imply writing a report and presenting the work to the rest of the class
  • research a subject not directly addressed in the lectures and do a survey paper on it. This implies writing the paper and presenting it to the rest of the class

Both the work assignments will be part of the final grade as discussed below.,

Exame 25,00
Trabalho escrito 35,00
Trabalho laboratorial 40,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Trabalho de investigação
Trabalho laboratorial
Total: 0,00

Eligibility for exams

Minimum of 40% on the overall grade for both work assignements.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade will be based on the work assignments grade and the final exam grade. The following formula will be used:

(NPT x 15 + NE x 5)/20
where:

  • NE = Exam grade (0-20)
  • NTA = paper survey grade (0-20)
  • NTL = lab assignment grade (0-20)
  • NT = work assignment grade (0-20)
  • NT = (NTA x 7 + NTL x 8 )/15
    • * paper survey is 7 in 15
    • * lab assignment is 8 in 15
  • NPT = min(max(NE - 4, NT), NE + 4))

This applies to all exams: normal, "recurso", special season, last year student or grade improvement.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

See "Calculation of final grade" above.

Classification improvement

Exam grade can be improved as per normal proceedings. Assignements may be improved on the following year.

Observations

Class attendance (theo or lab) is not recorded.
