Objectives

The Chemistry Lab I (Q111) course comprises a set of practical works, involving several experimental techniques and procedures. It also provides basic training in information and communication technologies.

Learning outcomes and competences

 Providing the students with a basic training in chemistry laboratory techniques and in information and communication technologies, namely computation of some chemical problems.

A1 – Lab classes (2 h /week)

1. Introduction to the course. Safety rules in the lab.

2. Introduction to basic chemistry lab operations.

3. Laboratory experiments:
PL1 – Preparation of solutions (2 classes).
PL2 – Acid-base titration.
PL3 – Purification by recrystalization.
PL4 – Determination of the stoichiometry of a reaction.
PL5 – Destilation of a water-acetone mixture.
PL6 – Spectrophotometric determination of a food dye.

A2 – Information and communication technologies (ICT) (1 h / week)

1. Handling worksheets
1.1. Statistical analysis of experimental results

Eligibility for exams

Continuous assessment without final exam. Maximum allowed number of absences: 1/4 of the total number of classes; 1/3 of laboratory experiments.

Calculation formula of final grade

Practical lab mark:
NLAB = 0.50 x NTP + 0.50 x NAP
where NTP is the average grade of all 6 practical laborations and NAP is the individual lab assessment mark

The final grade, NF, is calculated according to:
NF = 0.75 x NLAB + 0.25 x NTIC
where NTIC is the grade on the ICT part.

Approval requires NTP ≥ 10, NAP ≥ 8 and NTIC ≥ 8.
