Objectives

Study of the structure, occurrence and function of some of the products vital for living organisms.Application of organic reaction mechanisms to natural products and their biological and nutritious importance.

Program

1. DEFINITION OF NATURAL PRODUCT 2. CARBOHYDRATES 3. NUCLEOSIDES, NUCLEOTIDES AND NUCLEIC ACIDS4. LIPIDS- FATTY ACIDS AND TRIACYLGLICEROLS- WAXES- GLYCEROPHOSPHOLIPIDS AND ESPHINGOLIPIDS- PROSTAGLANDINES- TERPENOIDES- STEROIDS5. DETERIORATION IN FOOD LIPIDS AND IN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS - PEROXIDATION- ANTIOXIDANTS
LABORATORY SESSIONSThe following lab experiments will be realized:TP1 - Essential oils from plants.TP2 - The estimation of blood cholesterol.TP3 - Isolation of cholesterol from gallstones.TP4 - Gas chromatographic analysis of fats and oils.
TP5 - Saponification number of fats and oils.TP6 - Qualitative analysis of of carbohydrates. In one of the laboratory sessions the different groups will make an oral presentation of a subject related to the experiments performed.

Mandatory literature

000060181. ISBN: 0-534-16218-5

Teaching methods and learning activities

The theoretical sessions will be held as power-point presentations.
The moodle e-learning platform will be used (exercises...).

The lab experiments will be performed in groups of two students.
The students will also have to prepare an oral presentation related to a research work.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Description Type Time (hours) Weight (%) End date
Attendance (estimated) Participação presencial 56,00
Total: - 0,00

Eligibility for exams

Students must attend theoretical and lab sessions. They can not miss more than 25 % of any of the lessons. They must complete at least 2/3 of the lab experiments.

The grade of the lab information must be ≥ 9,5, scale is 0-20.
To dismiss the final exam, students must have a positive grade (≥ 9,5) in each of the tests.
To pass the course students (who did not dismiss final exam) must have a positive grade in the final exam.

Calculation formula of final grade

NF = 0,3 x NP + 0,7 x (NFr or NE)

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Realization of an individual work with oral presentation - 30 %
Realization fo the final exam (or the tests) - 70 %
In each part the grade must be ≥ 9,5.

Classification improvement

Improvement of the grade is only possible for the theoretical component, through realization of the tests or the final exam. 70 %

Observations

Pre-requisites
Students must have successfully completed the following courses (or analogous courses for non-chemistry students):
- Laboratório de Química I e II
- Fundamentos de Química
- Laboratório de Química Orgânica
- Química Orgânica
