Abstract (EN): The catalytic decomposition of methane into hydrogen and carbon was studied on La(2)O(3)-promoted Raney-type Fe catalysts. Promoted catalysts were synthesized by in situ thermal treatment of physical mixtures of Raney Fe and La(2)O(3). The catalysts were characterized by particle size measurement, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). La(2)O(3) acts as a textural promoter. XPS reveals charge transfer from La(2)O(3) to Fe. Promoted Raney Fe catalyst with an optimum loading of La(2)O(3) exhibited good performance in methane decomposition.
