Abstract (EN):
The LOM (Laminated Object Manufacturing) rapid prototyping process builds, layer-by-layer, paper prototypes. Although the machine operator tries to build the maximum number of prototypes in the working area, larges amounts of paper, which are not used, are disposed (cubes, frames and paper guides). The purpose of this communication is to present the work being conducted, at INEGI, for the development of innovative paper honeycomb structures, using the LOM leftovers. Honeycomb structures have been manufactured in a variety of materials, such as rubber, Kevlar, aluminium, paper, etc. A convenient balance between strength, stiffness and weight, achieved with this type of cellular materials, makes them very attractive for different types of applications, such as aeronautical and aerospace industry. Different types of specimens were produced varying several parameters in order to maximize the mechanical properties of the honeycomb structure such as: the paper coating, the features of top and bottom faces, the structure and filling of the cells and the attachment system of the faces to the cells. Finally, using the data obtained from the experimental tests, honeycomb panels with different geometries and sizes will be used in a car prototype to the Eco Shell-Marathon Competition.
