Abstract (EN): A detailed experimental study is described of mass transfer around particles dispersed in granular beds of inerts. (i) The sublimation of nahpthalene spheres (1.5 to 10 mm in diameter) immersed in packed beds of closely sized "ballotini" (0.20-6.0 mm) was studied; (ii) The combustion of coke and char particles dispersed in beds of sand and of a Pt catalyst, at pressures in the range 1-4 bar, was also studied. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of a theory developed in Part II of the present work. The agreement between theory and experiment is excellent and this leads to important conclusions about the mechanism of combustion of carbon particles dispersed in beds of sand. The results are believed to be of great significance to the understanding of coal combustion in fluidised bed furnaces.
