Resumo (PT): Este artigo pretende expor o modo como os falantes e a comunidade linguística encaram os fenómenos de mudança linguística. Numa perspetiva empírica e normativa, a forma tradicional de dizer é considerada correta e as novas formas, desviantes, são consideradas erros, um desvio em relação ao que se considera o bom uso. Mas a definição do «erro» na língua está também associada a parâmetros de variação social, cultural e geográfica. Foi também referida brevemente a perspetivação da mudança no âmbito de diversas correntes da linguística. Finalmente, são observados alguns casos de inovação em curso no português atual, inovações que se manifestam na pronúncia, mas também em novos usos gramaticais e lexicais. Considera-se finalmente que o erro enquanto desvio a uma norma prévia, tradicional é um sinal inequívoco de mudança.

Abstract (EN): This article discusses the way in which the speakers and the linguistic community face the phenomena of linguistic change. From an empirical and normative perspective, the traditional way of speaking is considered correct and the new forms are considered errors, a deviation from what is considered good linguistic use. However, this definition of «error» in language is also associated with parameters of social, cultural and geographical variation. The paper also briefly mentions how linguistic change has been analysed in the context of several currents of linguistics. Finally, some cases of innovation in current Portuguese are examined, innovations which are manifested in pronunciation, but also in new grammatical and lexical uses. Finally, it is considered that an error as a deviation from a previous, traditional norm is an unmistakable sign of linguistic change.
