Resumo (PT): Uma corrente de investigação já antiga, mas recentemente renovada, foi capaz de reunir alguma informação sobre as expedições vikings à Península Ibérica entre o século IX e os inícios do XII, colhendo-a sobretudo em fontes narrativas (tanto nórdicas, como latinas e árabes). No entanto, sabemos pouco sobre o cenário que os vikings encontraram quando aportaram a esta costa ou entraram pelos seus estuários, e sobre os tipos de interacção envolvida nos seus ataques (ou deles decorrente), um tema cujo estudo não pode dispensar as fontes locais. Recorrendo tanto a fontes materiais como escritas, a presente comunicação procura reavaliar a escassa informação disponível sobre o território português cristão, por forma a responder a uma questão essencial: a violência e a pilhagem resumem toda a história dessa interacção? Começaremos por equacionar o problema do povoamento litoral, tradicionalmente tido como sendo muito rarefeito, embora esta imagem deva muito à cobertura geográfica da documentação conservada. Em seguida, analisaremos três aspectos da interação entre os vikings e as populações locais: (i) os ataques, vistos da perspectiva destas populações, (ii) os resgates que tiveram de pagar para libertar os seus familiares cativos e (iii) alguns lugares que parecem sugerir um qualquer tipo de assentamento viking.

Abstract (EN): A significant body of research, recently revived, has gathered some information about Viking expeditions to the Iberian shores between the 9th and early 12th centuries, drawing mostly on narrative sources (Nordic, Latin and Arabic). Very little is known, though, about the scenario that the Vikings actually encountered when they moored along this coast or entered its estuaries and about the types of interaction involved in (and ensuing) their attacks; which is the kind of issue best approached through local records. Using both archaeological and written sources, this paper aims to reassess the scanty evidence available to us on the Portuguese Christian area in order to answer a basic question: was such interaction all about violence and loot? We shall first look at coastal settlement, traditionally seen as being very sparse, although this image owes much to the geographical coverage of the extant records. Then we shall dwell on three main aspects of the Vikings interaction with local people: (i) their attacks, as viewed from the standpoint of locals, (ii) the ransoms these had to pay to have their captive relatives released, and (iii) some places that might suggest some kind of Viking settlement.
